Sisterhood welcomes you!

THE SISTERHOOD OF TEMPLE BETH EL reaches out to benefit the Temple, the local community, and beyond.
Our objectives are to foster the highest ideals of Judaism as expressed through Temple Beth El;
to promote a closer fellowship among its members, and in cooperation with the congregation,
to be a mentor for religious, social, and educational activities.

Dr. Elisa Carandina to Speak

at Sisterhood3 Rosh Chodesh Shevat Gathering

January 24th, 2012, at Temple Beth El

The join Sisterhoods of Temple Beth El, Heska Amuna Synagogue, and the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge will celebrate Rosh Chodesh Shevat on January 24th at 6:00pm in Temple Beth El's Arnstein Social Hall. After a light supper, we will be treated to a talk by Dr. Elisa Carandina, from UT's Department of Religious Studies and the Fern and Manfred Steinfeld Program in Judaic Studies 2011-2012, as well as the Diane and Guilford Glazer and Lea and Allen Orwitz Teaching Fellow in Modern Hebrew. Dr. Carandina will speak on the topic of motherhood in contemporary Hebrew literature.

Elisa Carandina received her Ph.D. in Hebrew Studies in 2006 from the University of Turin and from the INALCO, Paris. Her main field of interest is contemporary Hebrew literature with special focus on gender issues. She has devoted her articles to the theme of motherhood in contemporary Hebrew literature and the use of myth in Hebrew literature by women writers. Dr. Carandina also has a wide translation experience with major Italian publishing houses for which she translated Israeli novels and essays. She taught for two years at L'Orientale University, Naples, as a non-tenured professor of Modern Hebrew Language and Literature.

Dinner will be followed by a special musical program presented by the religious school.


$8.00 per adult & $5.00 per child under 12


There is a family maximum of $25.00. Family consists of parents and their children only.

Profits will go to Second Harvest and Mazon.

RSVP by signing up on the Sisterhood Board at Temple or contact Karen Smith.

Please join in and help cook the dinner. Have a favorite vegetarian pasta sauce or minestrone soup?  Now is the time to show off your culinary skills.  

Please bring your sauce or soup in a crock pot or oven-proof/cook top casserole and Sisterhood will do the rest.  We will provide meatballs for the carnivores! .

Hamantaschen  

Hamantaschen Baking!

Tuesday, March 6th, at 12:00pm in the Temple Beth El Kitchen.

Everyone always has a good time in the Temple Kitchen, and what could be better than baking hamantaschen just in time for Purim?

Sisterhood will provide the hamantaschen dough. You will need to bring a brown bag lunch, a 3-inch cookie cutter, a rolling pin, and a hamantaschen filling of your choice. Please do not bring jam, jelly, or pie filling. You can take your hamantaschen home, swap them with others, or donate them to Sisterhoood. You do not have to be an experienced baker to join in the fun.

Help for Family Justice Center Needed  

The Sisterhood of Temple Beth El is continuing our support of the Knoxville Family Justice Center, which provides support and services for the victims of domestic violence.

Current needs are:
¬ Individual packs of crackers, cookies and fruit snacks
¬ Juice boxes
¬ Diapers and baby wipes
¬ Medium sized new stuffed animals
¬ Supermarket and gas cards in the amount of $10 each
Please drop off any donations in the designated box in the side lobby
